Can PCOS be cured? Understanding, Treating, and Reversing the Condition
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects millions of women of reproductive age. While it's often associated with ovarian cysts, the condition is far more complex. PCOS involves hormonal imbalances that can cause irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair growth, weight gain, and difficulty conceiving.
Despite common beliefs, PCOS isn’t just about cysts—it’s about how the body produces and regulates hormones, particularly androgens (male hormones). These imbalances often lead to irregular or absent ovulation.
A Holistic Approach to Healing
I believe the body is an intelligent, self-healing system—when given the proper environment. One of my clients, Anna, came to me struggling with PCOS symptoms and hoping to conceive. After a single session where we addressed her nutrition and lifestyle, we made a few small changes. Within weeks, her symptoms improved, and within months, she was pregnant.
This is why it’s essential to look at the whole picture—not just one cause or symptom. Healing PCOS involves more than just addressing one hormone or one part of the body.
Key Lifestyle Factors to Consider:
Nervous system regulation: Are you living mostly in a stressed, sympathetic state? Or are you able to relax into parasympathetic, rest-and-digest mode?
Mental and emotional wellbeing: Your thoughts, words, and emotional patterns deeply influence your physical health.
Sleep and hydration: Are you getting enough restorative sleep and drinking enough water?
Nutrition: What foods are you eating daily? Are you consuming excess caffeine, nicotine, processed foods, or harmful substances?
Movement: Is your body moving in a way that feels good and supports hormonal balance?
Stress and mindset: Chronic stress can sabotage healing. Are you kind to yourself? What does your self-talk sound like?
Sometimes, lab work is helpful, but even if your results are “off,” that doesn’t mean you’re broken—it just means something needs to shift.
The Mind-Body Connection
In my practice, I’ve seen how emotional wounds and negative thought patterns can manifest physically. For PCOS, this might include unresolved trauma, poor body image, or limiting beliefs around worthiness and femininity.
We work together to identify and reframe these thought patterns. Affirmations, self-love, and grace aren’t just nice ideas—they're tools for creating internal harmony. When women begin to truly care for and love themselves, healing often follows.
Symptoms and My Personal Experience
PCOS is often diagnosed through symptoms like:
Irregular or missing periods
Acne
Unwanted hair growth (especially on the face or chest)
Weight gain around the midsection
Hair thinning or loss
Dark patches on the skin (acanthosis nigricans)
Fertility struggles
I’ve experienced nearly all of these myself. I had missing and painful periods, cyst ruptures that sent me to the ER, weight fluctuations, mood swings, and persistent acne.
What Causes PCOS?
Most doctors will say PCOS is genetic or that it's a lifelong, incurable condition. While genetics may play a role, I believe environment, lifestyle, and thought patterns passed down through families are equally—if not more—important.
Insulin resistance is common in women with PCOS. Higher insulin levels can throw off hormone balance and worsen symptoms. But this doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it. You can change your body's response.
PCOS Is Not a Life Sentence
Contrary to what you may have heard, PCOS is not a condition you have to suffer with forever. I say this as someone who has lived it and helped others overcome it. With evidence-based lifestyle medicine, a plant-predominant diet, and mindset coaching, PCOS can often be reversed.
You don’t have to live with constant discomfort, emotional stress, or fertility struggles. Your body wants to heal—and with the right support, it can.
